You know the scripture that says a city set on a hill can not be hid, that no man would light a candle stick and put under a basket, but on a candle stick that it might give light to the whole house. Yeh? Matt 5:14-16. Great.

Well last night, I read an explanation of that verse that I’ve never thought of before. Here’s the explanation and what I think about it.

Even a little candle when set on a hill can give a lot of light.

It’s so awesome to me to think/know that even a little candle, The littlest item, in the littlest family of light producing objects when placed on a hill can give a lot of light.

Supposing your natural ability to do something, perhaps excel at math, or recall what you read in CRS, or even apply physics theory in real life is the little candle.

Or maybe the little candle is that talent of yours that you think is so small and insignificant. Maybe the fact that you’re a great listener, or that you have an eye for colors that look great side by side, or that you’re great at setting up awesome dates or organizing parties.

Whatever it is you love or can do, no matter how big or small you feel it is, pretend it is the small candle.

So if you put this small candle of yours on a hill, it can give a lot of light, meaning it can make a big difference or it could be a big deal.

The question then is, how do you put this candle(by now you should have identified what yours is) on a hill.

To me you put your little candle on a hill by putting in your very best in that thing you’re doing. It doesn’t matter what they’ve said. Whether they believe you’re going to fail or not. All that matters is that you’ve done your best. All that matters is that you didn’t hold back.

Put in your best. Do your little ordinary thing in an extraordinary manner and that would make all the difference. In so doing you are putting your candle on a hill.

Before you know it, your talent, ability, passion or whatever it is, wouldn’t seem so little and ordinary anymore.

Don’t let past failures get in the way of your future success.

Yes. This is very true. That you’ve tried and failed doesn’t mean you should just stop there, though I tell you sometimes it can feel like there’s no hope anymore, but still you have to keep pushing.

If it were like that, I mean if all the greats an inventors gave up after their first few failed attempts we might not have the light bulb, airplanes, cars, electricity, iPhones to mention but a few products where the inventors had to fail and start again.

Yeh yeh, you might be thinking someone else might have taken their place and invented it but you get what I’m trying to say.

But more than that, it’s even more important that you don’t let previous success get in the way of future success.

With the right mindset, one successful event, task or goal can be a stepping stone to more greater things or shall I say more wins!

But the minute you decide to dwell on past successes instead of going to work, allowing your head to “swell”, thinking all there is to be gotten has been gotten, chai. I won’t say more than that.

Previous successes are a good thing. Let them encourage you to do more. And that’s the key, do more.

See ehn, If there’s anything you shouldn’t be contented with in this life, it’s how much you’ve achieved. *drops mic.

*picks up mic again*

Please have a good day everybody and a wonderful week ahead.

“It took me 15 years to realize I had no talent for writing, but I couldn’t give it up because at that time I was too famous.” – Robert Benchley.

I love this quote because it reminds me that I do not need to have any natural ability or penchant for a thing to excel at that thing. With hard work, smart work, consistency and dedication I would do just fine.

This is not ignoring the hand of God, but then Heaven helps those who help themselves. And it works whether you’re Religious or not.

Some of us find it easy to fall behind the excuse of “oh I don’t have the talent.” Or “if only I were as talented as so so and so, I’ll do well.” And some of us just go ahead and do it anyway, hoping that in some way our effort would make up for the lack of talent.

Robert Benchley is proof that talent is not all that it takes to do well at anything. Having the natural ability for something would only take you far, but can not get you to your final destination. It is your efforts that’ll be the difference.

If you’re still in doubt of the credibility of this, remember the athletes’ creed, “hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.”

But hey, don’t just take my word for it, don’t even accept Robert Benchley’s just like that, say what if you tried it out eh?

“The beautiful ones are not yet born.”

I first heard this phrase when I was much younger and I felt how very Shakespear-esque. For some reason, I assumed it must have been William Shakespeare who was the author.

Only now, after asking my sister Diana the literary genius, did I find out that, the beautiful ones are not yet born is actually a book by Ayi Kwei Armah which was first published in 1968 and according to some dusts any work by Achebe or Soyinka.

Regardless of this new information, my thoughts about the phrase/quote’s meaning haven’t changed a bit.

In my mind, it means that if you think you’ve seen the most beautiful of people, the best of technology, the best of any situation you can think of, you’ve not seen anything because what is coming or what can yet be by far is better than what you are seeing or experiencing.

Is It any wonder that we 90’s baby are way finer than our predecessors? Is it any wonder that any cars or tech we see today is always surpassed by something else the next year?

To me It also means there’s no need tripping unnecessarily for what you’re seeing now. Most especially if there’re other things you need to be focused on such as getting educated and building your future.

You are not missing much if you are closing your eyes to the thrills of the day because the thrillest things, places, people and events are not yet born.

We just haven’t seen the best of anything yet. So don’t trip unnecessarily for what you see today.

We haven’t seen the best of anything yet, and that’s why the world is waiting for what you can offer!

It’s your turn now! What does the phrase the beautiful ones are not yet born mean to you?

TODAY’S QUOTE: Same Rope You Climb up on..

“The same rope you climb up on they’ll hang you with.”

Hmm. They again.

I first heard this quote from papi Dave the uncanny man. More recently, I heard it on a J Cole song “Fire Squad” which is where it originated.

Anyways, to me it means that we have to be careful about the means with which we achieve anything.

Our means has to be good, legit and clean otherwise that means/route to our achievement, wealth and accolades could be our undoing.

The means has a prominent part to play, in the justification of the end after all.

Thank you for reading.

Let me know what it means to you.

First and foremost, I would like to let you know that I’m not the author of the quote. I only found a picture on my timeline yesterday and the tweep did not say who was the author.

It’s a popular complaint that life isn’t fair. People use it a lot as excuse for not doing what they’re supposed to. How come this person gets this or how come this happens to that person. With that kind of mindset you might not go very far in life.

We need to know there are certain things we can not choose for ourselves. Such as the part of the world were born, our skin color, the weather on the day of that “oh so important date”, the team that wins the  UEFA champions league ( oh and by the way MANCHESTER UNITED FOR TREBLE THIS SEASON GUYS !! ) etc.

Certain things however we can orchestrate such as our attitude, our choices, what we study, what we do with the our lives, how far you’ll go in achieving in life, how you’ll respond to things that happen to you etc.
A lot of people however seem fixated on the things they cannot change. As a result they feel out of control, sad, depressed and seem to think life isn’t fair.

The thing is life is indeed fair, as I’ve been made to understand, because it’s unfair to everyone. Do not expect life to bring your way the ideal conditions for becoming great in life ( it is your duty to create it ), do not expect life to bring the right circumstances your way, you are to go out and find it or better still create it.

The English playwright George Bernard Shaw said, “People are always blaming circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.”

So you see, life is fair because it doesn’t hand anyone the right circumstances to excel. It is our duty to prepare ourselves and then create the circumstances we want. To prepare ourselves and then look out for opportunities.

Life is fair.

The next time you here someone say otherwise please correct them. It’s a reactive mindset and it’s not cool.

Don’t expect life to present the perfect situation for what you want to do or who you want to be. That’s your job. Find that perfect situation, if not create it or better still get started anyway.

Those who waited for the perfect circumstances before they began their projects….are still waiting.

Thank you amd have a great day !

Be safe.

I’m very sure you’ve heard the saying “think before you talk”. That saying is definitely not new to anyone at all. But I can bet that you haven’t heard it in the context I’m about to share with you now !!

I was having a discussion one day with a group of friends when Okonji Seye mentioned this.  T.H.I.N.K represents a group of questions one needs to ask his/herself before passing across any information.

Let me explain :

T- is it true ?

Before saying anything, especially when it has to do with others ask yourself if what you’re about to say is true ? If you’re not 100% sure of its truthfullness please don’t say it. Someone’s reputation could be at stake.

H- is it helpful ?

That something is true doesn’t automatically give you the go ahead to say it. Some things are true but are not helpful in any way. Such most of the time always lead to idle chit-chat and gossip. Which of course,if you are interested in making the best use of your time to prepare and position yourself for your bright future, you don’t want to be a part of.

I- is it important ?

Like are said earlier, you don’t want to be wasting your time talking about inconsequential people, things, or events. Asking if it is important both to yourself and your audience is a good way to keep your utterances in check.

N- is it necessary ?

Indeed it might have met all the above criteria but is it really necessary ? Does it really have to be said ? Would it add any value to the person listening ? Would there be any adverse effects if the people you’re talking to did t heat about it ?

K- is it kind ?

This is like the most important of all most especially when it has to do with other people. As a child I watched the cartoon Bambi. It was about a young deer who was orphaned. He had to be shown the ropes in the jungle by a bunny. One time the bunny was criticising something and the mother bunny said: what have your dad and I always taught you ? The bunny replied with what has become one of my favorite quotes and guiding creeds : “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Most especially when it has to do with other people.
There might be a few exceptions when you want to give advice to someone privately or when you want to crack a joke. In a way, they still apply even then. You’ll see that using the above criteria to screen what leaves your mouth will end up in you saying less which has a lot of advantages.

For example, if you don’t talk much, when you do talk, people will take you serious. Also, you are saved from being in those “they said that you said” situations. Again, it makes you attractive in a way. People would live to know what’s up with you and how come you don’t say much.
In the book of Proverbs it even says that even a fool is counted wise when he holds his tongue.
I rest my case !
I understand that it might take a while to get accustomed to. But nothing is impossible with commitment and consistent effort.
When you begging to practice it, you’d see that the above can save you from a lot of trouble.
I hope you find to useful.
Be safe.

Ps. I just found out that in the original thing, I is for Inspiring but Important would suffice !

Indeed there are two types of people in this world, there are males and females, there are people who play play station and people that are for x-box, there are people who think Lionel Messi is the greatest player of all time and people that think it is Christiano Ronaldo.
Most importantly,
There are people who can spend years going over an idea, discussing the many ways it would and wouldn’t work out.
There are people who actually go out and make stuff happen.
You ever had that one friend or uncle who always came up with the best ideas or who always made promises but couldn’t carry out any of them ?

Nobody likes these people.
To succeed you have to make stuff happen.
I’m not going to talk so much on this one.
My advice to you is that if you have any fire idea, maybe the next big thing the world is waiting for, any idea at all that could benefit yourself and your society but for some reason have not done anything about it I suggest right after reading this, you plan what you can do today, not Tommorow, but today that can bring you closer to making that idea a reality.

That is the way of great people.
In the words of Petr Voogd, Average people have great ideas, exceptional people have great execution.
Which are you ?
Thank you and have a great day.
